Experienced and competent physicians may be located in any setting, from large cities to small towns. However, most physicians experienced with ACC are associated with academic medical centers where rare, complicated cases are referred and clinical trial programs are more developed. Furthermore, academic medical centers often discuss patient cases in multidisciplinary “tumor board” meetings that ensure various treatment approaches are considered and include the three main oncology specialists:

• Surgeons – Surgeons typically are the first specialists seen by ACC patients to deal with primary tumors. Subspecialties exist for different tumor body sites (oral cavity, breast, lacrimal gland, trachea, Bartholin’s gland, etc.).
• Radiation Oncologists – Patients typically are referred to radiation oncologists by the surgeon to deliver post-operative radiation. However, some unresectable primary tumors or metastases may be treated with radiation alone.
• Medical Oncologists – Medical oncologists typically are consulted only if a patient has metastatic ACC. They offer drugs (systemic therapy) to address progressive disease and may coordinate with other specialists to consider surgery and ablative treatments.
